A Yoga Retreat in Goa for Beginners: Who It Suits and What to Expect

November 7, 20268 min readBy Alpesh Patwari

We are Alpesh Yoga, a yoga school at Arambol Beach in North Goa, so the courses described here are our own. We have written the page we would want a beginner to read before booking anything with anyone: who a short course suits, what the days involve, and when you would be better off waiting.

Quick answer

Yes, a Goa yoga retreat can suit someone with little or no experience, if it is built for it. At Alpesh Yoga in Arambol, the 5 Day Alignment Yoga Course is the usual beginner entry point ($150 for the course only, or $250 with food & accommodation): small groups, slow and precise teaching, and blocks, belts, bolsters and chairs from the first morning. The 5 Day Yoga & Meditation Immersion is the gentler option. The Goa season runs November to April.

Are Goa yoga retreats suitable for people with limited yoga experience?

Many are, but only the ones designed around a beginner, and the label "all levels" on its own does not tell you which. A retreat that runs fast flowing classes for a mixed group can leave a first-timer copying shapes they do not understand, while a slow, well-propped course can be the easiest place there is to start.

Three things decide whether a retreat will work for you as a beginner. First, the pace: are poses held and explained, or flowed through? Second, group size: will a teacher actually see what your knees and lower back are doing? Third, props: are blocks and belts part of the method, or brought out for whoever is struggling? The rest of this page answers those three questions for our own courses, so you can ask the same of any school.

Which of the Goa courses should a beginner choose?

For most beginners the 5 Day Alignment Yoga Course is the right first booking, because it is short, slow and starts from the ground up. Each day takes one region of the body: the feet and legs, then the pelvis and spine, then the shoulders, then supported inversions, and finally a full practice that puts it together. It costs $150 for the course only, or $250 with food & accommodation.

The 9 Day Alignment Yoga Intensive uses the same method over nine days ($350 for the course only, or $450 with food & accommodation). It suits a beginner too: the first three days are foundations whatever your experience, and Day 5 is deliberately lighter, with one practice and a free afternoon. What it asks of you is nine days of slow, careful attention, so take it if you have the time and already know you want depth.

If you want rest more than technique, the 5 Day Yoga & Meditation Immersion is the gentlest of the three ($250 for the course only, or $350 with food & accommodation). The movement is restorative rather than strenuous, with supported poses and long relaxations, and most of the time goes into meditation and sitting practice. It ends with a certificate of completion.

One course we would not usually suggest for a first trip is the 50 Hour Intensive Yoga Retreat. It runs roughly eight guided hours a day for six days. Complete beginners are welcome on it, but it suits people who already practise and are ready for full days.

Who teaches the alignment courses, and why does that matter for a beginner?

The alignment courses follow the method of Alpesh Patwari, the school's founder and lead teacher, who has 22+ years of teaching behind him and 21 years teaching alignment. That makes him one of the most experienced alignment teachers working today, and it shows in how the courses are built for newcomers: nothing is taken deeper than you can hold it well.

Alpesh Yoga was founded in 2014, is registered with Yoga Alliance, and has trained students from 40+ countries. If you want to know what beginners say after a week with us, read the student reviews, including the ones we did not pick.

What does a day on a beginner course in Goa look like?

A day on the alignment courses has about five guided hours in four blocks, with the early morning and the middle of the afternoon left free. This is the timetable for the 5-day course:

  • 08:30 – 10:15 Alignment-based asana practice with props
  • 10:30 – 11:30 Vegetarian brunch
  • 12:00 – 13:00 Alignment theory: adjustments, safety & sequencing
  • 16:30 – 18:00 Applied practice: corrections and prop work
  • 18:15 – 19:15 Breathwork & restorative practice

The morning practice is where most of the learning happens. You build each pose step by step, with a block or a belt so the shape is correct before it is deep, and the teachers move around the room correcting. The midday theory session explains why: what a joint is doing, which mistakes are common, and how to stay safe. The late afternoon goes back over the same poses with prop work and corrections, and the evening is quiet and restorative.

The gap in the middle of the day is real. Arambol Beach is a few minutes from the shala, and the time is yours: a new body usually welcomes the rest. Timings can shift with the weather and with what the group needs on a given day.

How do small groups and props help a first-timer?

Small groups and props are what let a beginner practise the correct shape of a pose before they have the flexibility to force it. In a big class nobody notices that your back knee is collapsing; in a small one, someone does, on the first morning, before the habit sets.

Props do the same job from the other side. A block brings the floor up to your hand in a triangle pose. A belt reaches your foot when your hamstrings will not. A chair or a bolster takes the weight in a forward bend, so the spine lengthens instead of rounding. On our alignment courses these are on the mat from the first morning for everyone, not produced at the end for whoever cannot reach.

  • Stiff bodies: props are the answer to classes that seem designed for people who are not stiff.
  • A sore back, shoulder or knee: the course helps you see which alignment habit tends to aggravate it, and the teachers adapt poses around it.
  • Nervous first-timers: a small group that practises together all day means nobody stays a stranger for long, and most people on the short courses arrive alone.

What do beginners need to bring and know before a Goa retreat?

You need very little: comfortable practice clothes, a water bottle and a notebook. Mats, blocks, belts, bolsters and chairs are all provided at the shala, and the 5-day alignment course includes a reference guide with photos and diagrams for each pose that you keep. For Goa itself, add light clothes, swimwear and sunscreen.

  • Tell us about your health when you book. Injuries, pregnancy, high blood pressure, neck problems or recent surgery change what you practise, and the inversion day in particular is modified or replaced in those cases. We would rather plan that before you arrive.
  • You do not need to be flexible. You need to be willing to go slowly and stop to look at what a joint is doing.
  • Choose the tier that fits your trip. Every course has a course-only price and a with-stay price that adds accommodation and vegetarian meals.
  • Know what is not included. Flights and travel to Goa, Indian visa fees, travel insurance, excursions, laundry and personal expenses are yours to arrange.
  • Plan around the season. Goa teaching runs November to April. From May to September our teaching moves to Dharamshala in the Himalayas, and the alignment courses are Goa-only.

Who should not book a beginner retreat in Goa?

A slow alignment course is the wrong choice if you want a sweaty, fast-moving workout week. Our classes hold poses and refine them, with a lot of stopping to explain. If what you want is mostly beach time with a class each morning, drop-in classes may suit you better than a course.

And none of these short courses is a teaching qualification. They improve your own practice and do not count toward Yoga Alliance registration. A short course is a sensible way to find out whether a teacher training is your next step.
